Lord Richard Hale

Lord "Richard was a very affluent London grocer. "

He made a great deal of money through trade.

"He used some of his money to purchase more land and some he donated to start up a grammar school in Hertford."

"Richard wanted to "erect a grammar school for the instruction of children in the Latin tongue and other literature in the town of Hertford".

The original school building was in use for 313 years from 1617 to 1930, and still stands near All Saints Church."

"It was known as the "Hertford Grammar School" until the mid 1970s when it became comprehensive.

The “Richard Hale School” still exists in Hertford. It is a boys' school founded on April 16, 1617 by the affluent merchant Richard Hale, eldest son of Thomas Hale of Codicote."

"In 1575/6, he purchased the manor of King's Walden which is in the Hitchin district of Hertfordshire," during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

"The Hale family occupied the manor from 1575 to 1898.

It is still standing and very beautiful. It stands in a small park, well wooded with good oak timber." -(Wikipedia)
